Diese Fragen nach der Faszination, nach der Form und nach der Sprache treffen die Grundidee von FOTOTREFF Berlin schon recht genau. Nicht umsonst heißt unser Motto “Talking about Photography”: Wir möchten unsere Leidenschaft für Fotografie mit anderen teilen. Und diese “Anderen”, also euch, miteinander in Kontakt bringen — Für mehr Austausch und noch mehr Faszination. 

Seit 2014 tun wir das persönlich, vor Ort, in der direkten Begegnung. Die digitalen Kanäle waren dabei immer eine Erweiterung dieses Ansatzes und eine Hilfe, unsere Begeisterung weiter zu tragen – unabhängig von Ort und Zeit. Die digitalen Kanäle sind immer mit dem mit gewachsen, was FOTOTREFF aus dieser Faszination wurde. Mit dem Aufwachsen des FOTOTREFF ist auch die Reichweite unserer digitalen Plattformen gestiegen: Instagram wurde mit dem 100. TakeOver durch Alec Soth im Jahr 2020 in der Auswahl internationaler — und spricht seither Englisch. Es wurde uns klar: Unser tumblr-Blog war schon lange nicht mehr geeignet den Enthusiasmus, den Dialog, der typisch ist für unsere Treffen, nach draußen zu tragen, zu denen, die nicht vor Ort sein konnten. So bewarben wir uns im Jahr 2019 um eine Publikationsförderung der VG BildKunst — erfolgreich. Noch vor Corona. Für den Aufbau einer “richtigen” Webseite. Hier ist sie. Sie ist für euch da. Denn mit euch wollen wir unser aller Interesse an, unsere Faszination für Fotografie teilen. In Begeisterung, in Skepsis, in Kritik und in Entwicklung. 

Für uns ist es ein Experiment, über unsere Veranstaltungen (zu finden unter den Editions) hinaus zu gehen und, mit diesen als Kern, nun mit den Contributions auch ein wenig Publizistik zu wagen. Viel Arbeit, die wir vor allem in das stecken wollen, was Freude bereitet. Und das ist auf jeden Fall die Vielfalt der Stimmen in und über die Fotografie. Daher werden wir besonderes Augenmerk legen auf Formate und Themen, die sich über das Bekannte und Gewohnte hinaus öffnen; Und für Stimmen außerhalb des FOTOTREFF. Dafür geben wir (wie auf Instagram) auch gerne mal unseren Kanal ab. Wir freuen uns, dass wir der Fotografie und den Menschen, die sie fasziniert, begeistert oder auch mal fragend zurücklässt, eine Plattform bieten können.   

Gleich zum Start haben wir (auch weil uns das selbst interessiert) Menschen in nah und fern gefragt, wie man über Fotografie schreibt. Du findest einige Antworten als ersten neuen Beitrag hier auf der neuen Webseite. Und wir haben so viel Input bekommen, dass bald noch ein zweiter Teil folgen wird (VIELEN DANK an dieser Stelle an alle Autor:innen der Statements).

These questions about fascination, about form and about language already capture the basic idea of FOTOTREFF Berlin quite precisely. Our motto is “Talking about Photography”: we want to share our passion for photography with others. And bring these “others”, i.e. you, into contact with each other. For more exchange and even more fascination.

Since 2014, we have been doing this in person, on location, in direct encounters. Digital channels have always been an extension of this approach and a help to carry our enthusiasm further – regardless of place and time. Our digital channels have always grown with what FOTOTREFF has become from this fascination. As FOTOTREFF has grown, so has the reach of our digital platforms: With the 100th TakeOver by Alec Soth in 2020, Instagram became international (and since then speaks English). It became clear to us, that our tumblr blog had long since ceased to be suitable for carrying the enthusiasm, or the dialogue that is typical of our meetings, to those who could not be there. In 2019 we applied for a publication grant from VG BildKunst — successfully. Even before Corona. For building a “proper” website. Here it is. It is here for you. Because we want to share our interest in and fascination for photography with you. In enthusiasm, in scepticism, in criticism, and in development.

For us, it is an experiment to go beyond our FOTOTREFF TALKS (Editions on this site), and to venture a little publishing with our Editions at its core (to find under Contributions). A lot of work, that we want to put into what gives us pleasure. And that is definitely the diversity of voices in and about photography. Therefore, we will pay special attention to formats and topics that open up beyond the known and the usual, and for voices outside of FOTOTREFF. For this, we will gladly give up our channel (as on Instagram). We are happy that we can offer a platform to photography and the people it fascinates, inspires, or sometimes leaves wondering.

Right at the start (because we wondered ourselves) we asked people from near and far how to write about photography. You can find their statements as the first new post here on the new website. And we got so much input that the second part of this collection will follow soon (MANY THANKS to all contributors of the statements).
