TALK 1

In the first part of the evening, we talked about the challenges that photographers, the media and we as viewers face when it comes to images of war and conflict. In our panel discussion, Ukrainian photographer Julia Kochetova and OSTKREUZ-photographer Sebastian Wells (Soлomiya Magazine) provided insights into their work. The discussion was moderated by Tobias Laukemper.

Julia Kochetova

Julia Kochetova is a photojournalist and documentary filmmaker based in Kyiv, Ukraine. She studied journalism at the Taras Shevchenko National University (UA) and the Mohyla School of Journalism (UA), as well as taking part in the IDFA Academy (NL). She covered the Maidan revolution (2013-2014), the annexation of Crimea (2014) and the Russian-Ukrainian war (2014-present). Her work from the conflict zone has been presented in exhibitions in UK, USA, France, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Serbia, Portugal and Ukraine and has been published by Vice News, Der Spiegel, Zeit, Bloomberg, Vanity Fair, The Guardian, FP, Reuters, NBC.

Tobias Laukemper

Tobias Laukemper is an independent photo editor, curator and lecturer. He worked for publications such as DIE ZEIT, NZZ am Sonntag, brand eins and GEO. From 2014-2020 he was co-director of FOTOTREFF Berlin, where he held numerous photographic talks and portfolio reviews.

Sebastian Wells

Sebastian Wells lives in Berlin and has been a member of the OSTKREUZ agency since 2019. He studied photography at the Ostkreuzschule Berlin, the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld and the KASK in Ghent and works as a photographer for newspapers and magazines such as Stern, Süddeutsche Zeitung, 11Freunde oder Neue Zürcher Zeitung. In 2022 he founded the Soлomiya Magazine together with Vsevolod Kazarin.

In the second part of the evening, curator Natasha Christia from Barcelona presented her book exhibition project War at a Distance in conversation with photographer Alfonso Moral (ANTI-books): A compilation of publications characterized by a reflexive attitude towards war and the media, far from the classic reporting.

Exhibition

In addition to the talk at FOTOTREFF Berlin, we presented at Salon am Moritzplatz the photo book exhibition War at a Distance, previously shown at the SCAN Tarragona International Photography Festival. A reading room where curator Natasha Christia brought together 21 books for an expanded narrative on the implications of distance in an era of visual warfare hyper-connectivity.

Natasha Christia

Natasha Christia is a curator, writer and educator based in Barcelona. She holds a BA in archaeology and art history from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens, an MA in modern art and film from the University of Essex and a postgraduate diploma in publishing from the University of Barcelona. Ηer curatorial research focuses on both the complicity and potential role of the photographic document in the revision of dominant historical narratives and ideological myths. Recent shows include: You Are What You Eat (Krakow Photomonth 2019); Kate Nolan. Lacuna (Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris, 2023), as well as the photobook reading rooms, War at a Distance and This Story Will Never Get Finished (SCAN Festival, Tarragona, Spain, 2022-2023).

Alfonso Moral

Alfonso Moral began working as a photojournalist for the newspaper in his hometown of Valladolid, Spain. Soon after, he moved on to cover global events in the Middle East and Central Asia after 9/11, contributing to international magazines and agencies. After living in Beirut and Tunis, he moved to Berlin in 2017, where he founded the publishing house ANTI-books. His work has been recognized by various international competitions such as Les Rencontres de Arles, the Manuel Rivera Ortiz Foundation, the Leica Oscar Barnack Award or the Magnum Expression Award and has been exhibited in cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, London, Beirut, Washington, Rome and Mexico City.

FOTOTREFF # 40 — War at a Distance

TALK 1

Die 40. Ausgabe des FOTOTREFF mit dem Titel War at a Distance beschäftigte sich aus aktuellem Anlass mit Bildern des Krieges: ihrer Herstellung, Vermittlung und Rezeption.

Unsere Wahrnehmung von Kriegen und Konflikten wird meist nicht durch eigenes Erleben geprägt, sondern aus der Distanz, durch die Berichterstattung darüber. Ein wichtiger Teil davon sind Fotografien. Seit dem Angriff Russlands auf die Ukraine begegnen uns die Bilder dieses Krieges täglich in den Medien.

Im ersten Teil des Abends sprachen wir über die Herausforderungen, denen sich Fotograf*innen, Medien und auch wir als Betrachter*innen gegenübersehen, wenn es um Bilder von Kriegen und Konflikten geht. In unserer Gesprächsrunde gaben die ukrainische Fotografin Julia Kochetova und der OSTKREUZ-Fotograf Sebastian Wells (Soлomiya Magazine) Einblicke in ihre Arbeit. Moderiert wurde das Gespräch von Tobias Laukemper.

Julia Kochetova

Tobias Laukemper

Tobias Laukemper ist freier Bildredakteur, Kurator und Dozent. Er arbeitete für Publikationen wie DIE ZEIT, NZZ am Sonntag, brand eins und GEO. Von 2014—2020 leitete er zusammen mit Anna Charlotte Schmid den FOTOTREFF Berlin und führte dort zahlreiche fotografische Gespräche und Portfolioreviews.

TALK 2

Im zweiten Teil des Abends stellte die Kuratorin Natasha Christia aus Barcelona im Dialog mit dem Fotografen Alfonso Moral (ANTI-books) ihr Buch-Ausstellungsprojekt War at a Distance vor: Eine Zusammenstellung von Publikationen, die sich abseits der klassischen Berichterstattung durch eine reflexive Haltung gegenüber dem Krieg sowie den Medien auszeichnen.

Natasha Christia

Natasha Christia ist Kuratorin, Autorin und Vermittlerin und lebt in Barcelona. Alfonso Moral

Alfonso Moral arbeitete zunächst als Fotojournalist für die Zeitung seiner Heimatstadt Valladolid. Bald darauf berichtete er über globale Ereignisse im Nahen Osten und Zentralasien nach dem 11. Ausstellung

Begleitend zum Vortrag beim FOTOTREFF Berlin zeigten wir im Salon am Moritzplatz die Fotobuchausstellung War at a Distance, die zuvor beim SCAN Tarragona International Photography Festival zu sehen war. Die Kuratorin Natasha Christia versammelte hier 21 Bücher zu einer erweiterten Erzählung über die Bedeutung von Distanz im Zeitalter der visuellen Kriegsführung und der Hyperkonnektivität.
