For FOTOTREFF #37, we have invited artists Alex Grein (Düsseldorf) and Rachel de Joode (Berlin) to share their artistic practices and experimental approaches to the medium of photography. Through their works, both artists challenge our established perceptions of what a photograph should or can be.

What is a photograph? This simple question offers countless answers, even more so since the extension into virtual space. Materialfragen is a newly conceived series by FOTOTREFF Berlin that regularly makes photography and its materiality the subject of discussion.

Rachel de Joode
Rachel de Joode (*1979, The Netherlands) is a multi-media artist and educator based in Berlin. She earned her diploma in time-based art from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. De Joode mixes mediums, particularly those of photography, sculpture and most recently, painting. Her work bounces between the physical and the virtual, exploring the relationship between the three-dimensional object and its two dimensional-representation. Recent shows include the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art; Henie Onstad Kunstsenter Oslo; ZKM Karlsruhe; Kunstverein Nürnberg; and Higher Pictures in New York. She was awarded the Deutsche Börse Residency Program amongst others and received scholarships from the Mondrian fund and the Berliner Senat. De Joode currently teaches materialized photography at ECAL (École cantonale d’art de Lausanne).
Alex Grein
Alex Grein (b. 1983 in Cologne, lives and works in Düsseldorf) studied at FH Düsseldorf and as a master student with Andreas Gursky at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Grein’s artistic focus is on photography and its experimental exploration. The exploration of photographic possibilities as well as their reflection, questioning and challenge through the inclusion of other media and modes of presentation characterizes her artistic practice. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, most recently at the RAW Photo Triennale Worpswede, the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf; the Philara Collection, Düsseldorf and Galerie Gisela Clement, Bonn. She has received, among others, the Landsberg Prize 2022 of the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf, the Photography Prize of KunstSalon Köln and the MKK Scholarship for Photography. Since 2022 she is a professor of photography at the Hochschule Mainz.

During the second part of the evening, Berlin-based photographer and photographer Massimiliano Corteselli talked about Contrapasso, a work in progress. Massimiliano Corteselli’s work ranges from the reappraisal of personal experiences, and his own body perception, to questions about home and identity, which he always explores with an associative and very subjective approach.

Was ist eine Fotografie? Eine einfache Frage, die immer noch unzählige Antworten bietet, umso mehr seit der Erweiterung in den virtuellen Raum. Für FOTOTREFF #37 haben wir die Künstlerinnen Alex Grein (Düsseldorf) und Rachel de Joode (Berlin) eingeladen, ihre künstlerischen Praktiken und experimentellen Ansätze im Umgang mit dem Medium Fotografie vorzustellen. Beide fordern mit ihren Arbeiten unsere etablierten Vorstellungen davon heraus, was eine Fotografie sein sollte oder sein kann.

Alex Grein
Alex Grein (*1983 in Köln, lebt und arbeitet in Düsseldorf) studierte an der FH Düsseldorf und als Meisterschülerin bei Andreas Gursky an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Greins künstlerische Auseinandersetzung gilt der Fotografie und ihrer experimentellen Erforschung. Das Ausloten fotografischer Möglichkeiten sowie ihre Reflexion, Befragung und Herausforderung durch den Einbezug weiterer Medien und Präsentationsmodi prägt ihre künstlerische Praxis. Ihre Arbeiten waren in zahlreichen Ausstellungen zu sehen, zuletzt bei der RAW Photo Triennale Worpswede; dem NRW-Forum Düsseldorf; der Sammlung Philara, Düsseldorf; und der Galerie Gisela Clement, Bonn. Sie erhielt unter anderem den Landsberg-Preis 2022 des NRW-Forum Düsseldorf, den Fotografiepreis des KunstSalon Köln und das MKK Stipendium für Fotografie. Rachel de Joode
Rachel de Joode (*1979, Niederlande) ist eine in Berlin lebende Künstlerin. Sie studierte zeitbasierte Kunst an der Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. De Joode kombiniert verschiedene Medien, v.a. Fotografie, Skulptur und zuletzt auch Malerei. Ihre Arbeiten bewegen sich zwischen dem Körperlichen und dem Virtuellen und erforschen die Beziehung zwischen dem dreidimensionalen Objekt und seiner zweidimensionalen Repräsentation. Zu den jüngsten Ausstellungen gehören die Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art, das Henie Onstad Kunstsenter Oslo, das ZKM Karlsruhe, der Kunstverein Nürnberg und Higher Pictures in New York. Sie wurde unter anderem mit dem Deutsche Börse Residency Program ausgezeichnet und erhielt Stipendien vom Mondrian-Fonds und dem Berliner Senat. De Joode unterrichtet derzeit Materialized Photography an der ECAL (École cantonale d’art de Lausanne).

Im Anschluss an den TALK stellte der in Berlin lebende Fotograf Massimiliano Corteselli seine Arbeit ‚Contrapasso‘ vor. Massimiliano Corteselli beschäftigt sich in seinen Arbeiten häufig mit der Aufarbeitung persönlicher Erfahrungen, der eigenen Körperwahrnehmung, sowie mit Fragen nach Heimat und Identität, denen er stets mit einem assoziativen und sehr subjektiven Ansatz nachgeht.
