On June 17, 2017, Stephanie Kloss, artist, and Joachim Blank, professor at the HGB Leipzig, discussed at FOTOTREFF #20 in Berlin. Kloss presented exemplary projects, her methodology and a new work. Stephanie Kloss’ photographic works deal with sociological, political and spatial phenomena. She is represented in numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad. In addition photographer Ingo Lawaczeck presented his work “FR_GM_NT_”.

Stephanie Kloss
Stephanie Kloss is a German visual artist who’s photographic work focuses on historic, social and architectural utopias. After her architectural studies at the Technische Universität Berlin she studied photography and media art with Thomas Struth and Candida Höfer at the HfG Karlsruhe. Her work deals on the image behind the visible, the invisible, on the story transported by the depiction. It s a search for the fragmentary image of a forgone present, a utopian past. Metaphorical and physical boundaries between spaces, but also between utopia and reality, history and the present, individual and collective, scale and model are negotiated in her images.

Joachim Blank
Joachim Blank, 1963 born in Aachen, is an artist based in Berlin working with different materials, media and formats.
In the early 90ies he became a cofounder of early Net Art projects. From 1996 – 2005 he collaborated with Karl Heinz Jeron as Blank & Jeron. Since 2003 he is a Professor of Media Art at the Academy of Fine Arts (HGB) in Leipzig.
The confrontation with the digital world has become a main aspect of his own artistic practice. Blanks central question revolves about how media are changing the perception of materiality, how medial arguments are enrolled in the surfaces of the objects and are transforming them. It is about investigating the materiality of things and images, their outer appearance and physical presence in terms of surface-, meaning- and knowledge production. Ingo Lawaczeck
Durch die übliche Sichtweise nimmt ein Betrachter ein Gebäude als Ganzes und als Teil seiner Umgebung wahr – dass Erkennen eines Gebäudes findet in der Summe aller Teile statt. Doch ist die Betrachtung des Gesamten notwendig, um den Charakter eines Gebäudes wiederzugeben, oder reicht die Kategorisierung in einzelne Struktur- und Konstruktionselemente aus? In meiner Arbeit FR_GM_NT_ setze ich mich mit der selektiven Wahrnehmung von Architektur auseinander. Die Arbeit zeichnet sich durch abstrakte Formen und die Autonomie der Fragmente aus. Dargestellt sind Fragmente von Gebäuden, die sich aus den Kategorien Fenster, Fassadenelemente, Konstruktionselemente und Anbauten ergeben. Diese Dekonstruktion von Gebautem in seine architektonischen Elemente erzeugt Sequenzen von Fragmenten. Für jedes Gebäude ergibt sich eine typologische Struktur. Die einzelnen Fragmente beschreiben das Gebäude anhand unterschiedlicher Charakteristika. In seiner flächigen Abstraktion stellt das Gebäude ein weiteres Fragment dar: Ohne Details – nur durch Form und Farbe – wird das Gebäude definiert.
