Luise Schröder

Die Fotografin und bildende Künstlerin beschäftigt sich in ihren Installationen, Fotografien, Videos und Publikationen mit Geschichte und deren Bedeutung für die Gegenwart. Schröders Arbeiten eröffnen stets poetische Reflexionsräume, alternative Wissenskontexte und ermöglichen neue Perspektiven auf Geschichte in der Gegenwart. Luise Schröder studierte Fotografie und Medienkunst an der Leipziger Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst. Ihre Arbeiten wurden international präsentiert, u.a. Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin; Centre Pompidou, Paris; 7. Berlin Biennale für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Berlin; Galerie EIGEN+ART, Leipzig/Berlin. Nach Residenzen in der Villa Aurora (Los Angeles) sowie an der Cité internationale des arts (Paris) ist sie aktuell Stipendiatin des Berliner Programm Künstlerische Forschung 2024/25.

Dana Lorenz

Dana Lorenz (Berlin) ist eine queere transdisziplinär arbeitende bildende Künstler*in. In der künstlerisch-forschenden Praxis thematisiert Lorenz die Verwobenheit von Klassismus, queeren Körperpolitiken und biografischen Erfahrungen. Aus dieser Recherche entstehen  raumgreifende Installationen, eine Assemblage aus skulpturalen Objekten, Fotografien und Texten, die essayistisch und assoziativ, humorvoll und reparativ geschrieben sind. Das Schreiben an der Schnittstelle zur bildenden Kunst verkörpert weder eine akademische, noch eine rein literarische Textproduktion, sondern ist vielmehr ein integraler Bestandteil der visuellen Praxis.

Sophia Kesting

Sophia Kesting (Leipzig) ist eine feministisch-intersektional arbeitende bildende Künstlerin, Fotografin und Lehrende. Sie ist Mutter einer Tochter. In ihrer künstlerischen Forschung, ihren Rauminstallationen und fotografischen Langzeitprojekten thematisiert sie ausgehend vom fotografischen Bild durch Achivmaterial, auto-fiktionalen Text, Sound und Lecture Performances gesellschaftliche und soziale Umbrüche und macht Wechselwirkungen zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart sicht- und erfahrbar. Sophia Kesting studierte Fotografie an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, wo sie anschließend bis 2023 künstlerische Mitarbeiterin in der Klasse für Fotografie und Medien war. Zur Zeit macht sie einen Phd in der Kunst an der KU Leuven / LUCA school of Arts in Brüssel und arbeitet ausgehend von der friedlichen Revolution 1989 zu Widerstandspraxen und den Auswirkungen des Umbruchs auf unsere Gegenwart und Zukunft im deutschen und europäischen Kontext.

Sonia Voss

Sonia Voss (Berlin/Paris) ist freie Kuratorin und Autorin. Ihr Interessengebiet umfasst historische oder kulturelle Fotografie sowie zeitgenössische Positionen aus Frankreich, aus Deutschland und Osteuropa. Zu ihren Ausstellungen gehören: The Forms of Things, The Forms of Skulls, Forms of Love (Paris Photo/Grand Palais, 2024) oder Restless Bodies. East German Photography 1980-1989 (Les Rencontres d’Arles, 2019; National Gallery of Art, Vilnius, 2022). Sonia Voss gibt regelmäßig Publikationen heraus und schreibt als Gastautorin; Zuletzt erschienen: Hosen haben Röcke an. Künstlerinnengruppe Erfurt 1984-1994 (nGbK/Hatje Cantz, 2023), The Freedom Within Us. East-German Photography 1980-1989 (Koenig Books, London, 2019).

SHOW + TELL

Im zweiten Teil des Abends laden wir junge Fotograf*innen aus der Metropolregion Berlin im Rahmen unseres Open-Call-Formates SHOW + TELL ein, eigene, sich-im-Werden-befindende fotografische Arbeiten vorzustellen und Feedback und Anregungen für die Weiterentwicklung ihrer Projekte zu erhalten.

The things we carry – upheaval, bodies, resistance

At FOTOTREFF #45, artists Luise Schröder, Dana Lorenz & Sophia Kesting will speak with author and curator Sonia Voss. Drawing on their recent publications, they will exchange views on contemporary photographic perspectives on German-German history and social transformation processes.

TALK

Luise Schröder, whose artistic practice focuses on history and memory and their significance for the present, has been conducting research since 2021/22 into the forgotten activities of non-governmental women’s and lesbian groups in the GDR, both in terms of content and aesthetics. Her publication ‘Stömungen in Bewegung’ was published in 2025 by Fotohof Salzburg.
Sophia Kesting and Dana Lorenz have spent twelve years exploring the transformation process of Leipzig’s Place of Peaceful Revolution in documentary-artistic photographs. In their publication entitled “Asphalt, Steine, Scherben” (Vexer Verlag, 2024), the duo weaves together their jointly developed photographic imagery with biographical text fragments.

Luise Schröder

The photographer and visual artist explores history and its significance for the present in her installations, photographs, videos, and publications. Schröder’s works always open up poetic spaces for reflection, alternative contexts of knowledge, and enable new perspectives on history in the present. Luise Schröder studied photography and media art at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts. Her work has been presented internationally, including at Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin; Centre Pompidou, Paris; 7th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, Berlin; Galerie EIGEN+ART, Leipzig/Berlin. After residencies at the Villa Aurora (Los Angeles) and the Cité internationale des arts (Paris), she is currently a fellow of the Berlin Artistic Research Programme 2024/25.

Dana Lorenz

Dana Lorenz (Berlin) is a queer transdisciplinary visual artist. In their artistic-research practice, Dana Lorenz explores the entanglements of classism, queer body politics, and biographical experience. From this inquiry emerge expansive spatial installations—assemblages of sculptural objects, photographs, and texts—texts that move between essayistic reflection and associative layering, carried by humor and a reparative sensibility. Writing, in this context, is not understood as purely academic or literary, but as an embodied and integral part of Lorenzs visual language.

Sophia Kesting

Sophia Kesting (Leipzig) is a feminist-intersectional visual artist, photographer, and lecturer. She is the mother of a child. In her artistic research, spatial installations, and long-term photographic projects, she explores social upheavals through photographic images, archival material, autofictional text, sound, and lecture performances, making the interactions between past and present visible and tangible. Sophia Kesting studied photography at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig, where she was an artistic associate in the photography and media class until 2023. She is currently pursuing a PhD in the Arts at KU Leuven / LUCA School of Arts in Brussels, where she is working on resistance practices and the effects of the upheaval on our present and future in the German and European context, based on the peaceful revolution of 1989.

Sonia Voss

Sonia Voss (Berlin/Paris) is a freelance curator and author. Her interests include historical and cultural photography, as well as contemporary works from France, Germany, and Eastern Europe. Her exhibitions include The Forms of Things, The Forms of Skulls, Forms of Love (Paris Photo/Grand Palais, 2024) and Restless Bodies: East German Photography 1980-1989 (Les Rencontres d’Arles, 2019; National Gallery of Art, Vilnius, 2022). Sonia Voss regularly publishes and writes as a guest author; her most recent publications are: Pants Wear Skirts: The Erfurt Women Artists’ Group 1984-1994 (nGbK/Hatje Cantz, 2023) and The Freedom Within Us: East-German Photography 1980-1989 (Koenig Books, London, 2019).

SHOW + TELL

In the second part of the evening, as part of our open call format SHOW + TELL, we invite young photographers from the Berlin metropolitan region to present their own photographic works in progress and receive feedback and suggestions for the further development of their projects.
